So you’re a fan of the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros and you’ve made the mistake of reading Onyx Storm immediately after its release and now you have to wait who-knows-how-long until the next one? Me too, you’re not alone! Beginning with Fourth Wing, the bestselling series follows Violet Sorengail as she navigates being a dragon rider with little preparation in the midst of a war that holds many secrets. Full of high-stakes, tension, a delicious enemies-to-lovers romance, and so many side characters to fall in love with, this is such an incredible series to pick up if you haven’t already. For my fellow readers who find themselves in a slump after finishing Onyx Storm, here are five books you should read to make waiting for the next book in the series a little less painful.

1. Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

Divine Rivals is perfect for readers who are seeking a beautiful romance that must stand the test of an ongoing war from the front lines. The story follows two rival lovers who communicate through magical typewriters, and if that isn’t enough to convince you, the storytelling is absolutely phenomenal in this duology.

2. The Black Witch by Laurie Forest

If your favorite element of the Empyrean series is following a strong-willed FMC who appears frail and weak but quickly proves to everyone around her that strength goes beyond physical abilities, The Black Witch is for you. Set in an esteemed college that admits nearly everyone, including magic wielders and healers, the descendent of a famed witch must watch her back at every turn and search for loyalty in unlikely places.

3. Fireborne by Rosaria Munda

If you came for the dragons, Fireborne should be your next read. Following the events of a revolution, everyone is given the opportunity to become a dragonrider. With the potential for an upcoming war, betrayal at every turn, and making the ultimate choice between friendship and survival, this book is perfect for fans of Fourth Wing.

4. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

This forbidden romance set in a military academy has many elements for fans of the Empyrean series—a brutal government keeping secrets, rebels, magic, and a strong female lead. This four-book series will be sure to keep you busy until Rebecca announces the next book following Onyx Storm.

5. Fear the Flames by Olivia Rose Darling

Following the theme of dragons, Fear the Flames follows a strong FMC bonded to 5 dragons who must set aside her differences and form an alliance with a group of unlikely people in order to save what she holds dearest—her kingdom. This forbidden romance between enemies working together to take down a common enemy is a great read for fans of Fourth Wing.
