Books to read while you wait for Wicked
By Kayla Hobbs
As we approach the release of Wicked on November 22nd, I can’t be the only one who has been eagerly awaiting any new crumb and teaser that the marketing team has been posting on Instagram. The movie has been very hyped up over the last few years, and as a huge fan of musicals, I am so excited to see these characters brought to life on the big screen. For my fellow musical lovers who are chomping at the bit for this new release, I have compiled a list of books to read while listening to popular musical soundtracks that will give you all the feels and make the wait a little more bearable.
1. Fatal Throne by Candace Fleming
For fans of the hit Broadway musical SIX, this is a fictionalized retelling of the lives of the six wives of King Henry VIII. This is a uniquely written novel featuring several POV’s—including the six wives and King Henry—that is penned by six different authors. Whether you are a history lover or a reader looking for a unique take on a very real period of time, this is the read for you.
2. The Alex and Eliza Trilogy by Melissa De La Cruz
If you have the Hamilton soundtrack on repeat, this may be the series for you. This YA series follows the love story of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler and the events of their lives that together, shaped American history. For any readers obsessed with Hamilton and looking for a heartfelt series to dive into, definitely add this to your TBR.
3. The Lonely Hearts Hotel by Heather O’Neil
If the message about rising above adversity and following your dreams despite the hardships you face that was prevalent in The Greatest Showman has stuck with you, The Lonely Hearts Hotel is a must-read. This incredible tale follows two orphans with a dream to put on the greatest circus the world has ever seen while they face the realities of living in poverty through the Great Depression. A great addition to any musical lovers’ TBR.
4. Phantom Heart by Kelly Creagh
In this YA retelling of Phantom of the Opera, a young girl who doesn’t believe in the paranormal moves into a very old and crumbling Victorian mansion with her family. With a steamy love triangle and compelling writing, and featuring many beloved elements while also remaining its own unique story, this is the perfect book for fans of the classic by Gaston Leroux.
