Keke Palmer is one of those celebrities you can't help but feel connected to. Maybe it's her dazzling personality or the way she isn't afraid to say what she feels but there is just something about the way she carries herself.
That's why I was so excited to pick up Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative. Let me start by sharing something most readers don't realize upon picking this book up. This is not Keke Palmer's memoir. While she does talk about her life, it's more about her talking about how to help you.
Self-help books aren't everyone's cup of tea so it makes sense why this book got such polarizing reviews. With that being said, Keke Palmer did relate her tips to some of her own personal experiences. Honestly, that's part of the reason why I loved listening to this.
If you didn't know, Keke Palmer narrates the audiobook and it's every bit as fun as watching her during an interview. Of course, she's her usual bubbly self but knows when to change her tone and even when to throw in an impression or two to give you that little burst of laughter.
Master of Me by Keke Palmer will surprise you with its content.
Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative is a solid read as it's clear Keke put a lot of her heart and soul into writing it. She gives some solid advice and even shares some struggles she's had in her own life. That's not to say that everything in her book is relatable as there are some moments that feel so specific to her or celebrities in general that you'll be wondering why it was included.
When Keke talks about her career, her struggles, and her personal life, it feels like having a conversation with a friend. She talks about her friendship with Jordan Peele who helped her to get a role in Nope and even how Dolly Parton made her feel comfortable when she was dealing with some insecurity during filming. While you can replace those names with people you know, it is fun to sit back and visualize that.
Sadly, it felt like this book was mis-marketed and that's part of the reason why it's become such a polarizing read for many. One glance at Goodreads will show you that many were hoping for a memoir and honestly, so was I. Regardless, her writing was engaging and it's clear she was passionate about what she was talking about. However, it goes without saying that this story wasn't what I had hoped for which is disappointing.
No matter, Keke did a great job, narrating this audiobook and if you're interested in a self-help book with sprinkles of Keke's life mixed in, then it's worth picking up.
