If there's one author I can always guarantee to get me out of a slump, it's Freida McFadden. There is something about her books that just works for me.

Thankfully, Poisoned Pen Press reached out to me about her latest release which is The Boyfriend. If you've read her before, you'll know that her books can tend to be a bit unorthodox.

I'd even go as far as to call her the queen of the unexpected plot twist. That's why going into The Boyfriend, I had no idea what was going to happen and truly, I had no idea how everything was connected in the end.

With Halloween right around the corner, The Boyfriend needs to be on your TBR for this month. I'd like to thank Poisoned Pen Press for sending me an ARC.

The Boyfriend is a rollercoaster ride in the best way.

The Boyfriend features two different perspectives as we're following Tom in the past and then Sydney in the present. To put it simply, Tom's life as a teenager is unpleasant. No one seems to like him, he only has one friend and his father is abusive. However, things change once Tom meets Daisy and his life truly starts to turn around.

In the present storyline, Sydney is just trying to find her Prince Charming. She's not asking for much, just someone who won't ghost her and be an absolute jerk. Unfortunately, things go awry for her upon meeting a guy named Kevin. Not only does he not look like his photos but he starts to go after Sydney. She ends up getting saved by a mystery man who turns out to be Tom.

As you might imagine, we're meeting Tom in the future but Sydney doesn't have the context we have and things get even worse as Sydney's best friend, Bonnie is murdered. While it seems like Bonnie's boyfriend at the time might be the killer, he has an alibi. After her death, Sydney is still reeling but ends up running into Tom again and the two begin dating.

Things seem great with Tom until he starts acting strange and from there, the wildness in this story truly begins. As we're finding out more about Tom's past, we're trying to piece together how it plays into the future. However, as with most Freida McFadden books, you won't be able to guess how everything is connected. Since this is a thriller, I'm not going to give anything away but trust me when I tell you that your jaw will be on the floor.

If you haven't picked up a Freida McFadden before or are excited by the concept, then you need to pick up The Boyfriend. It is fun, gory and absolutely absurd in the best way.

The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden is out now where books are sold.
