Top 4 classical coming-of-age stories
Growing up, I was always a fan of reading YA and coming-of-age stories. There's something hopeful and optimistic about seeing someone grow with the world around them. When I started reading classics, I found that the same appreciation I had for coming-of-age stories still existed, they just existed in another genre than I was used to.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Little Women is a quintessential coming of age story as we follow the March sisters from adolescence into adulthood. Each faces their own tribulations (sisterly fights, the desire to fit in, etc), makes mistakes, learns that life is messy, and learns from these obstacles. Fueled by their dreams, family, and love, the March sisters each experience a coming-of-age story as they grow and learn.
Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery
Similarly to Little Women, in Anne of Green Gables, we follow the titular character as she grows up. Anne is always an imaginative and emotional kid, and that impacts her behaviors and relationships when she moves to Avonlea. Her coming-of-age story revolves around her learning to better herself and learn from her mistakes. Anne grows up to be more well-rounded, and someone who follows her heart.
Emma by Jane Austen
Jane Austen has written several novels with coming-of-age stories, including Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park. The particular reason I chose Emma for this list was because her coming-of-age story is tied to her growth and maturity. Emma Woodhouse is 21 at the start of the novel and is spoiled and lonely because of her status. However, she meets people who challenge her to be more selfless and kind to others. That growth arc is her coming of age in becoming more mature and empathetic.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Jane Eyre follows the titular character throughout her life, spending time at her resentful aunt's, school, and working as a governess. While Jane is often shaped by the events that happen to her and the decisions of other people, she has the tenacity to overcome hardships. Her resilience and desire to protect herself, encourage her to follow her own path. Jane has a coming-of-age story as she comes into her own throughout the novel, despite continued challenges.
