5 Cozy Mysteries with an Easter theme to read this holiday season
Chocolate Bunny Betrayal by Tonya Kappes
Although this is the fifth book in the Holiday Cozy Mystery series, I actually started with this one. I really enjoyed the fact that the person trying to solve the mystery is a journalist in town. It actually made sense for her to want to solve a murder. Especially since she’s the one who found the body during an Easter festival.
What I think was really fun about this book was the fact that the characters are very quirky and engaging. Depending on how much you read cozy mysteries, you might be able to figure out who did it pretty early on, however, I didn’t. I didn’t know who did it until so much closer to the end.
Even though this is a few books into the series, I don’t think you’re truly missing out by reading this one first. But if this is an author that you have enjoyed in the past, why not check out this Easter themed story? And yes, I would say that when you have a competition for the best bunny costume at Easter, you’re definitely on theme for the holiday.
The Chocolate Bunny Murders by Holly Winters
Honestly, this Easter cozy mystery had me at chocolate. It’s a small town mystery, exactly what we expect from a more classic cozy mystery, and the murder weapon was a chocolate bunny. I mean that alone made this book worth reading. And the victim, being a chocolatier, really completed the picture.
I also enjoy the fact that you don’t need to have read a bunch of other books to know what’s going on. In fact, I don’t even think this is part of a series. I think this is just a one-off cozy mystery. I really enjoyed the fact that you don’t find out what’s going on until much closer to the end of the book. It’s not like the mystery is exposed early, and then you’re just reading more words. It was very engaging overall.
Killer Easter Pie by Carolyn Q Hunter
What I really enjoyed about this book is the fact that it is definitely a culinary mystery, while also featuring some classic elements of a cozy mystery. Not only is there a murder, but there’s also a robbery involved. And they didn’t just have it set around Easter, there’s actually an Easter egg hunt happening, which adds to the theme. In fact, the murder is connected to the robbery of a bejeweled egg during the hunt.
I think some of the best books in the cozy mystery genre are the ones that give you enough of a twist to keep you guessing, and that’s what we get in this book. I really enjoyed the food descriptions, as well as the characters themselves. I think this is a great read for both Easter and spring.
Eggsecutive Orders (A White House Chef Mystery) by Julie Hyzy
I really enjoyed this Easter cozy mystery. I love the fact that it’s set at the White House, and because of how the murder takes place, it looks like the kitchen staff is in trouble. Not only is the kitchen off-limits, but our chef has to prep for the annual Easter egg roll on the White House lawn. Basically, this means that even without a kitchen, the show must go on. It’s a fun storyline, with an amazing twist or two.
I found this to be a very quick read, and I love the humor that I found throughout the book. On top of that, I love books with recipes, and this has that. This writer had me hooked, and knowing that there are nine books in this series means that I have plenty to read for the next few weeks.
The Easter Sunday Slaughter by Imogen Plimp
It might sound like there are bodies everywhere in this cozy mystery, it really isn't that bad. In fact, I would almost say that the idea of this being a slaughter is almost too harsh for this book. I really enjoyed the characters and the fact that our female lead is not necessarily a young woman just starting out, but rather an older woman with life under her belt. Plus, the small town setting was a win as well.
Once again, there are some great descriptions for us foodies, and the fact that our amateur sleuth has opened a B&B adds to the cozy vibes. I was here for this whole mystery, and how the twists really added to the story.
