Best Non-Candy Treats for Book Lovers to Pass Out on Halloween
By Sara Trimble
With Halloween here, there's no doubt your kids are going to end up with more candy than you could ever want them eating. Non-candy Halloween treats are a great choice to give out to trick-or-treaters. And you can set your house apart as the one with the cool Halloween gifts.
We've put together a list of the coolest non-candy Halloween treats, with several items geared towards book lovers.
Color Me Bookmarks
Bookmarks are an essential resource for avid readers who don't like to harm the pages of their books by folding corners. You can print out Halloween-themed bookmarks using any computer and card stock (or plain printer paper and pasted onto a piece of construction paper for structure).
Whether you want to pass out crayons to go along with the colorable book mark is a personal choice, that may depend on your budget. If you do give out crayons, go the restaurant route and limit it to two or three crayons. You can also add a small piece of laminate sheet to go along with the bookmarks so kids can keep their markers protected once they color them.
Make Monster Pencils
Halloween is a great time to pass out pencils. You can get packs at Dollar Tree and other generic places that are Halloween.
Or you can get creative and make adorable monster ball toppers to make the pencils look more fun. You can glue different sizes of craft pom poms to the top of the pencils and hot glue googly eyes and small felt circles for the mouths.
Since you're taking away the pencil's eraser, you can also pass out Halloween shaped erasers, like ghosts, pumpkins, and witch hats. If you have a cutting machine like a Cricut, you can go further and also create Halloween stickers to pass out with the pencils.
Pass Out Boo Bubbles
Halloween and bubbles go hand in hand. Think of all the greatest spells. You can get small bubbles at your local craft store. Or you can create big batches of your own and buy small empty Halloween containers to add your bubbles inside. Add some food coloring (and a warning label for parents to know the bubbles can stain clothes and surfaces) and you can create awesome colored Halloween bubbles.
Give Out Glowsticks
Another great Halloween treat you can get at your local dollar store and pass out instead of candy are glow sticks. You can buy different types of glow sticks so you have a wide variety of glowing things to hand out. Glowsticks are great for kids to have on Halloween nights when they're wandering around in the dark. The glowsticks can make them easier to keep up with and for them to be visible to other people.
And who doesn't love glowing up? The neon sticks can even double as nightlights for a late-night read after the evening's activities end.
Halloween Themed Activity Sheets
If you have an awesome printer and don't mind using your ink on printing things you'll give away, Halloween activity sheets are fantastic. You can find tons of printables on Etsy, Teachers Pay Teachers, and in free Facebook groups. Printables can include activity sheets like word searches, mazes, and crossword puzzles. You could also do coloring sheets, short Halloween stories, or write your own ad-libs.
