Sometimes, a hockey romance just hits the spot when you are looking for something new to read. Oftentimes, it is what you’re looking for to keep you engaged and entertained. And if you are looking for something new to read, we have one that was released on March 11 with a lot of hype.
If you are a fan of hockey romances and you’re looking for something new to read, then Lexi LeFleur Brown has released her first hockey romance, Shoot Your Shot. And it is definitely one of the best sports romances we have read this month.
I received an early copy of Shoot Your Shot for review, and decided to give it a read to see how it held up amongst a sea of other hockey romances. And I have to say that the first time I read this book, I fell in love. I enjoyed Brown’s writing style and the fact that she actually has played hockey gave it a level of honesty that was very refreshing. It felt like the author knew what she was talking about, because clearly she does.
Shoot Your Shot by Lexi LaFleur Brown is a well-crafted rom-com hockey romance

I found this to be very similar to a friends-to-lovers type situation, but it was not quite that. Because these two main characters jumped into bed very early on as a one-night stand, and then because of superstitions around sports success, it led to a relationship that developed over time. It was almost like acquaintances to lovers more than friends to lovers. But it all worked, and it really did make sense.
Shoot Your Shot was really quite sassy and I definitely love a sassy romance. I think what I liked the most was that it was very flirty and steamy, but with plenty of humor as well. It was a nice blend of some of my favorite things. At the same time, there was definitely some vulnerability with both of our leads. And I loved how inclusive the whole story really was. There was a very vibrant cast of characters, and they helped to really bring this story to life.
Another thing that I liked was the fact that this relationship doesn’t feel forced, even though our leading lady, Lucy, was a hot mess. There is a solid development of this relationship over the course of the story in a way that felt natural, even with the way Jaylen and Lucy met. It wasn’t like an Insta-love story, which I think would’ve been problematic. Instead, it’s the superstitions that really lead to a connection.
I also have to point out that I really liked our leading man. Jaylen definitely has a lot on his plate. Whether we’re talking about his mental health, the loss of a friend that leads to him nearly ruining his own career or even his own superstition, he was a very well-rounded character. And I appreciate the fact that we got chapters from his perspective, as it really gave us better insight into who he is.
I think the only downside to Shoot Your Shot was the conflict towards the end of the book. It was very predictable, but annoying. It’s exactly what we expected to find, unfortunately. But I don’t think it ruined the overall story. I think this is a solid four out of five-star read. And that is really impressive when you consider the fact that this is Lexi LaFleur Brown’s debut novel.
If you are looking for something fresh to read, Shoot Your Shot by Lexi LaFleur Brown is the way to go.
