National Dog Day always makes me happy, after all, I am a huge dog lover. My poodle, Elsa, is my writing partner, best friend, and snuggle bug. While my parents had a dog when I was little, Elsa is the first dog I truly considered mine. And every time I think about our bond, I smile because I know there are plenty of other amazing human and dog bonds out in the world. So in honor of National Dog Day, I put together some books that show exactly why dogs will always be man's best friend.

1. A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron

This novel takes us into the mind of a dog - literally! Told from a dog's point of view, we follow this adorable soul through various reincarnations as he works hard to discover his purpose. Throughout the novel, we learn exactly what it means to be man's best friend, and the book lets us wonder how our furry companions see the world. A fun and heartwarming story, it reminds us how some bonds are unbreakable, and why dogs will always be considered man's best friend.

2. No Ordinary Dog by Joe Layden and Will Chesney

I have always been curious about the process training dogs have to go through in order to be put to work. And military dogs are no exception! This book follows the story of Cairo and her handler. From picking her out as a puppy to the rigourous training she went through, and her important role during the raid on Osama Bin Laden's compound in 2011. It's a valuable insight into not only military dogs but also how unique the bonds they have with their human handlers are.

3. Arthur by Mikael Lindnord

Recently turned into the movie Arthur The King, this book is all about a dog's accidental journey into extreme sports. After a stray dog joined his team one night, Mikael Lindnord threw the dog a meatball. The dog, who they called Arthur, followed them throughout the race - and the team quickly adopted him as an additional teammate. This is a book that shows the danger and adrenaline filled with adventure racing, while also showing us the unbreakable bonds this dog formed with Mikael - leaving no doubt dogs choose their humans as much as we choose them.

Arthur is available through Greystone Books
