It is finally October, which means it is officially time to pull out those jackets, eat way too much candy, and dust off those fall TBR reads you’ve been putting off until now. Whether you have been buying pumpkin spice lattes since August or you have waited until today to dig through your storage room for Halloween decorations, it is now officially time for everyone to come together and get excited for spooky season! My TBR is packed to the brim with witchy rom-coms and romantasy picks, many of which are being released this month. What better way to celebrate the beginning of the month than with a list of brand new romantasy books to add to your list of spooky reads?

1. Throne of Secrets by Kerri Maniscalco

The second book in Kerri’s Prince of Sin series brings a delicious enemies-to-lovers story about a Prince of Hel and a reporter hell-bent on bringing him down. In order to save the kingdom from ruin, the two must put their differences aside and ally with one-another, leading to a revelation that maybe the line between hate and love is not so different after all. Throne of Secrets can be read as a standalone if you have yet to read Kingdom of the Wicked or Throne of the Fallen—but I highly recommend checking those ones out!

2. Swordcrossed by Freya Marske

In this swoon-worthy low-stakes queer romantasy set in a society that places great emphasis on politics, we follow a con artist swordsman and an heir to a struggling family business. The two grow closer even as an impending wedding grows closer, and as they try to uncover secrets and betrayals, they find their own may be closer to the surface than they thought.

3. Heir by Sabaa Tahir

In a brand new duology from the author of An Ember in the Ashes—and set in the same beloved world— is a story about three young characters, all with very different backgrounds, who must learn how to navigate their way through love, greed, and the overall burden of power. If you have yet to read An Ember in the Ashes, don’t worry! This duology can be read on its own.

4. Spectactular by Stephanie Garber

For fans of Caraval and Once Upon a Broken Heart, Spectacular is a holiday novella that takes place after the events of Finale—the final book in the Caraval trilogy. Follow Scarlett and Tella through the holiday season where they will undoubtedly get up to some mischief, discover the magic of the season, and fall deeper in love. I highly recommend diving into the Caraval universe before picking this one up to avoid spoilers for the series!

5. Don’t Let the Forest In by C.G Drews

In this dark and gothic queer romantasy novel, we follow high school seniors who find interest in the dark and disturbing—one writes nightmarish stories while the other brings the characters to life on paper. When they discover these creatures and stories are somehow coming to life in the forest, the boys must work together to destroy them, which only draws the two closer together.
